Excellence Girls Charter School, an all-girls, free, public charter school, opened on September 3, 2009 to 145 Kindergarten and 1st grader scholars and will grow to serve girls in grades K through 8.  We accept students through a random, blind lottery.  Most of the school’s students come from the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, where the school is located. 

The mission of Excellence Girls is to prepare students to enter, succeed in, and graduate from college preparatory high schools and from college. 

At Excellence Girls, we cultivate in our young women the academic skills, knowledge, and character necessary for them to succeed in college and become responsible citizens and leaders of their communities.  Our rigorous curriculum offers over three hours of literacy instruction and sixty minutes of math instruction every day, in addition to science, social studies, character education, fitness, art, and/or music.  

The Excellence Girls academic program is based on that of its brother school, Excellence Boys Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant.  Now in its sixth year of operation, Excellence Boys has achieved outstanding academic results.  On the 2009 New York State Math Exam, 100% of Excellence Boys 3rd, 4th and 5th Graders scored advanced or proficient.  84% of Excellence Boys 3rd Graders, 90% of 4th Graders, and 90% of 5th Graders scored advanced or proficient on the 2009 State English Language Arts Exam.  Both sets of results far outpace the results of the local district, New York City, and New York State.
