The first school in Uncommon Schools' Preparatory Network is Leadership Preparatory Charter School in Bedford Stuyvesant, which currently serves students in grades K-3. The school opened in August 2006 and has posted strong results in its first two years of operations. Co-Director and Founder Max Koltuv leads the school with Co-Director Tara Marlovits.
Leadership Prep is modeled on Roxbury Preparatory Charter School. For four consecutive yeras, Roxbury Prep has been the highest-performing urban middle school in Massachusetts. On the 2007 state 8th grade math exam, the school outperformed every school in the state.
John King, Roxbury Prep's Co-Founder and former Co-Director for Curriculum & Instruction, oversees the Preparatory network, while Roxbury Prep's Founder and former Co-Director of Operations and Finance, Evan Rudall, is the CEO of Uncommon Schools. The network ultimately will operate eight elementary and middle schools. The network's second elementary school will open in the summer of 2009.
