Timers are a daily tool for teachers, and while the technique isn’t new, it’s recently gotten a lot of attention. Washington Post columnist Jay Matthews writes about the technique outlined in Doug Lemov’s books here.

The books provide dozens of techniques to pace the class and help students absorb and understand what they’re learning. This is where timers come in handy, providing increments of allotted time for each activity.
