To successfully fight COVID-19, our first responders (healthcare providers, transit workers, and other key personnel) must be able to come to work. The NYC Department of Education has created Regional Enrichment Centers—places where children of these front-line workers can be safely cared for while their parents continue to serve the city in this time of need.

The RECs are staff by DOE employees and community-based organization partners, and will provide children with three hot meals daily, remote learning with their teachers, and activities like art and music, and social and emotional support. RECs will be available citywide.

Donate to the Uncommon Resiliency Fund

Thank you for supporting our students and schools. Every dollar you give has an outsized impact while we navigate our changed world: implementing remote learning, finding creative modes of delivering meals and special education and social services, and supporting alumni impacted by college closures.

  • $50 feeds a child breakfast and lunch for a week
  • $250 buys a laptop for a student whose schooling might otherwise be disrupted
  • $1,000 enables us to create another week’s worth of remote learning content
  • $5,000 ensures continuity of special education services for an entire school for a month

Resources to Safeguard Your Health

We are committed to the health and safety of our school communities across Uncommon and continue to closely monitor updates from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding the recent outbreak of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). We will continue to update our protocols as the situation evolves and proactively communicate about any possible impact to families and our school communities.

The health and safety of our Uncommon community is our first priority. As we monitor the situation, we will continue to update you on the measures we take to keep your children safe.

Below are the preventative measures the CDC recommends we all take to safeguard our own health and the health of our community.

  • Wash hands frequently and effectively. This is the most important step we can all take to keep ourselves and our community healthy. (Use soap and water and rub hands under the water for at least 20 seconds.) If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, or your elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash immediately.
  • Clean and disinfect anything you touch frequently.
  • Keep a safe distance from anyone who may be sick.
  • Adults and children should stay home when sick, and for at least 24 hours after a fever breaks. Call your doctor and let them know your symptoms and travel history.
  • Get your flu shot— it’s not too late!
