Zavier Perez

Zavier Perez has long enjoyed projects that involved working with his hands, and was always adept at wiring and setting up electronics–everything from home repairs to entertainment systems. After high school, he utilized grants and other financial aid to enroll in the Electrical Engineering and Systems track at Lincoln Tech in Union, NJ. Over the last year he has worked on modules and classes involving both high-voltage and low-voltage systems, including power lines, basic circuitry, motors, and basic internet and ethernet systems. Zavier describes the work as very focused, but easy because he enjoys it. What he’s found most challenging is making mistakes: you can learn from them, but because of the nature of the work, you can’t be careless for obvious safety reasons. Zavier explained how he pays close attention to everything his instructor does when learning a new skill, and then puts his time in working in the labs. In this way, he’s developed confidence whenever taking on a new system–so much so that he now regularly assists his instructors teaching newer students in mods, like motor control, that he’s already passed!

Lincoln Tech will be hosting career fairs in the spring to help Zavier and his peers find jobs in the industry. While Zavier feels he could do residential work, his ultimate goal is to get a commercial job working on construction projects or for an electrical company like PSG&E. No matter what, he’s enjoying the work and will continue to develop his skills!
