“You can’t be what you can’t see.”
At the beginning of program every year, Summer Teaching Fellows are presented with the above quote by Marian Wright Edelman, an activist for children’s rights and the founder of the Children’s Defense Fund. The quote sets the stage for the 7 to 10 weeks Fellows will be spending in an Uncommon classroom and, if offered a full-time position, their future career as teachers with Uncommon Schools. It also speaks to the broader mission of Uncommon Schools: to get young people from low-income families to and through college.
Our Summer Teaching Fellowship was highlighted in a closing message at Philos 2019, the annual convention for Democrats for Education Reform in Washington, D.C. Watch the full video below, or skip to the 7-minute mark to hear Jenny Baxi, Senior Associate Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Michelle Yaruqui, a current North Star Academy teacher and former STF, and Quinterrence Bell, Principal of Excellence Boys Charter School and former STF, speak about the importance of preparing teachers and leaders for the success of students.
