Mekhi Addison, a senior at Louisiana State University’s College of Humanities & Social Sciences, exemplifies the power of purpose, curiosity, and courage to evolve. She began her college journey as a psychology major, determined to make a difference in the American healthcare system and to advocate for mental wellness in underserved communities—especially among children. Her early leadership as the founding Treasurer of LSU’s West Indian Student Association and her dedication to service, including volunteer work at the Baton Rouge food pantry, reflect her deep commitment to community uplift.
As Mekhi progressed through college, her entrepreneurial spirit ignited. Inspired by courses in entrepreneurship and investment competitions, she launched her own sustainable swimwear brand, Nagé Nyree—a venture that not only merged creativity and business, but also awakened a new, urgent passion for environmental advocacy.
Although her foundation in psychology nurtured her fascination with the human mind, Mekhi began to feel a disconnect between her academic path and a deeper, unfulfilled passion: environmental justice. As she researched sustainable practices for her business, she confronted difficult truths about the human relationship with the environment. This eye-opening journey led to a pivotal decision—after a period of reflection and reorientation, she shifted her major to International Studies with a concentration in Environment and Development.
Mekhi’s journey is far from over. This summer, she will travel to Tanzania to volunteer on an environmental project, continuing her mission to create lasting, positive impact on a global scale. Following graduation, she plans to explore the rich culture and landscapes of Japan—and to begin learning Japanese, fueled in part by her love for anime.
Mekhi Addison’s story reminds us that growth is not always linear, and that listening to one’s inner calling can lead to powerful transformation. Her journey stands as an inspiration to students everywhere: you don’t have to choose between your passions—sometimes, the most impactful path is the one you create yourself.
