Brielle Velez, a proud graduate of Camden Prep’s founding class, is currently making waves at Vanderbilt University.
Knowing that she wanted to attend a Top 20 university, she strategically chose applying Early Decision to improve her chances of acceptance. Transitioning from Camden, New Jersey, to Nashville, Tennessee, has exposed her to a range of cultures and perspectives, broadening her understanding of different worldviews and experiences. This shift has allowed her to immerse herself in a new environment while gaining valuable insights that are shaping her academic and personal journey. During her visit to the campus on Anchor Day, Brielle was impressed by the university’s dedication to free expression, even amid protests surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. The openness of the campus to dialogue stood out to her as a powerful statement of Vanderbilt’s commitment to fostering diverse viewpoints while fostering student engagement.
Brielle acknowledges that a common misconception about attending a predominantly white institution (PWI), is the assumption that there would be limited diversity or opportunities for students of color or that one may occasionally experience discrimination. However, she has found that there are many vibrant and supportive Black organizations on campus, including Divine Nine (D9) fraternities and sororities, which play a central role in the community. Brielle is involved in multiple organizations that support women of color, including Black Girl Fest, where she handles program logistics and empowers her peers through various initiatives. She is also an active member of student council and continues to find ways to use her leadership and organizational skills to uplift others. Leveraging the academic habits she developed at Camden Prep, Brielle engages in deep discussions in her political science classes, often analyzing the complex factors affecting different forms of government. She has come to understand that comparing governments is akin to “comparing apples to oranges,” as economic and geographic factors shape each uniquely.
What advice do you have for other students and incoming freshman?
“Having a routine and making time for activities you enjoy is so important… You are a person first and then a student.” She continued to highlight the significance of finding hobbies, such as going to the gym or spending at least an hour a day doing something that brings joy.
“Prepare your mindset for this journey as a new adventure rather than focusing on what you are leaving behind. This outlook has helped me transition smoothly to Vanderbilt.”
Looking back, Brielle feels proud to have been part of Camden Prep’s founding class, contributing to a legacy that will impact future generations. Her journey from Camden to Vanderbilt is not just a story of academic success, but also one of new beginnings and empowerment. As she continues to carve her path, Brielle offers this last advice to other students:
“Take things one step at a time, and don’t be afraid to embrace the new while staying true to your roots.”
