Uncommon Schools New York City serves over 3,900 K-12 students across 20 schools in Brooklyn, including both single-sex and co-educational schools. Each school shares the same mission of preparing students to enter, succeed in, and graduate from college. Students are randomly selected by public lottery in grades K and 5, and we maintain waiting lists through grade 8. We currently have schools in the Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Prospect Heights and Williamsburg neighborhoods within Brooklyn.
Across Uncommon New York City, on the spring 2012 state exams in grades 3-8, 87% of Uncommon’s students scored Advanced or Proficient on the Math exam, besting the citywide average by 27 percentage points, the overall state average by 22 percentage points and the New York State White student average by 13 percentage points. On the ELA exam, 55% of Uncommon’s students scored Advanced or Proficient, 8 percentage points above the citywide average, equaling the state average and eleven percentage points below the New York State White student average. Ultimately, Uncommon Schools New York City will grow to 21 schools serving approximately 6,000 students.
